The Uburanga Honey Story

When my child had the flu, I was told to give her a mixture of natural honey and onion. However, the honey I bought was artificially altered- it was not natural. I couldn’t find natural honey anywhere in Kigali. I had to go all the way back to the village where my husband was born in the Easter Province to get the natural honey from the farmers. I bought 7Kg !!

Our daughter recovered, and then I began using my stock of honey to help other family and friends with their daily use. I enjoyed helping people use healthy honey instead of sugar. “My clients” increased, and I even started to sell the honey to local supermarkets.

After few months, I realized that some supermarkets couldn’t take my honey because it wasn’t certified by the Rwanda Standards Board (RSB). The idea of expanding my business seems to be complicated and out of reach. I was going to stop by my customers kept calling me and asking for my honey, and at the same time, I couldn’t find a job. My husband and I realized that my business could be profitable, and so, in 2017, I started Uburanga Honey.

Uburanga Honey was the first honey company in Rwanda to become HACCP certified in 2021. In 2019, we were certified by the Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority for the RSB S-Mark, essential for selling products commercially.

We are an innovative company and keen to contribute in better health in Rwanda. We are collaborating with the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS) at the University of Rwanda to test if honey can be used to treat wounds.

Our members consist of six single women, families. and youth. Families also grow sorghum, beans, Irish potatoes, maize and bananas to eat and sell.

We have a technical experts who advise on helps, manage the beehives. trains our farmers on harvesting honey, and how to care  and increase bee population. This is important as bees are at risk globally. We harvest the honey using clean jerrycans. Technicians use specials clothing to protect themselves from bee stings.

Our plan is to provide all our farmers with clothing modern equipment’s to help increase the quality of harvested honey. We also want to upgrade to modern beehives which collect more honey and give bees safety and longevity.

We harvest honey every 3 months and expect to produce 25 tons in 2022. Other farmers are now interested in joining Uburanga Honey, to access new market and earn good prices. We pay our farmer above-market rates, more than other companies, and they really appreciate it. We buy all their honey so farmers are well rewarded without having too look for other markets.
